Can poison oak/ivy do real damage if it gets into your blood?
I managed to find myself in contact with poison oak a week ago today; the spot where it first started, there was an open cut. The rash is nearly unbearable, and has spread very strangely (horrible nasty rashes on the left side of my body, little tiny occasional weird bumps on the other side).
1) Best suggestions for treating it? (oatmeal bath, calamine lotion, have not helped at all)
2) Should I see a doctor because of my fear that it got into my open cut?
3) Also --- I know you get poison ivy/oak/sumac from allergies to those plants... would Benadryl help calm my system?

I have had Poison Ivy at least 100 times and have never heard of it getting into someone's blood.... not through an open cut or otherwise. I suppose it would be possible if you injected the urushiol (the poison the plants release that causes the rash) but that's about the only way.
Realize that an open cut typically does not lead directly to the blood stream. In fact, our bodies are pretty smart in that we bleed, that blood coagulates and provides a self made band aid. Since blood is coming out of the cut (not sucking in) it pushes poisons and bacteria out of the body.
Poison ivy, western poison oak, and poison sumac have the poisonous sap (urushiol) in their roots, stems, leaves and fruit. The sap is released when the plant is bruised, making it easier to contract Rhus-dermatitis in the spring and early summer when leaves are tender. The sap may be deposited on the skin by direct contact with the plant or by contact with contaminated objects, such as shoes, clothing, tools and animals. Severe cases have occurred from sap-coated soot in the smoke of burning plants. Because urushiol is inside the plant, brushing against an intact plant will not cause a reaction. But undamaged plants are rare because "Poison oak, ivy and sumac are very fragile plants," Stems or leaves broken by the wind or animals, and even the tiny holes made by chewing insects, can release urushiol.
Approximately 24 to 36 hrs after a sensitized person is exposed to the urushiol, a blistery, itching rash develops. Usually within 15 minutes of contact, the urushiol binds to skin proteins. If it is washed off with soap and water before that time, a reaction may be prevented. After the antigen is fixed, however, it cannot be washed off or transferred to other areas. Scratching or oozing blister fluid cannot spread the antigen to other areas of the body or to other persons. New lesions that appear a few days after the primary lesions represent less sensitive areas or areas where less antigen was deposited, not spreading of the antigen. Because the course of the reaction usually is 12 to 15 days, 2 weeks of medication should be prescribed.
If poisoning develops, the blisters and red, itching skin may be treated with dressings of calamine lotion, Epsom salts, or bicarbonate of soda. Scientists have developed a vaccine that can be injected or swallowed. But this is effective only if taken before exposure.
I've had these rashes just about everywhere including in my eyes. The worst places are the bottoms of the feet / hands and fingers.
The best thing you can do to deal with the itching is just to keep still when you feel itchy. You might apply a cold compress but don't rub or scratch infected areas. Keep infected areas exposed to the air and try not to cover with clothing if possible.
When I've had an extreme case of the stuff I have gone to my doctor and gotten a cortizone shot. This has almost immediate response and relief to the situation.
