How to revive an old door?
We're doing some rennovations to our home and are trying to reuse what we have as much as we can. Partly due to budget and partly because we're environmentally conscious. How can we bring back life to several old doors? They're still solid and functional...just ugly! Would it look terrible to paint them?
Could do some creative stuff with them. In general, old doors are MUCH better made than new ones, which are built more like cardboard boxes (including the same materials) more than actual doors. You could strip and stain and finish them, or painting is OK, or a combination of the two. Contrary to what has been posted here, most of the OLD doors (1950's or before)were meant to be a stain and varnish finish, and you may find that such a finish under the paint. Some strippers can remove paint while leaving most of the original finish in place for restoration. OF course, I am talking about the panel doors, the ones made up like cabinet doors, with panels set into a frame of heavier wood. If you have older slab doors, these are usually of birch, with a waffle core made up of plywood. These doors are much better than modern doors made up of, as I mentioned before, cardboard. These can be painted or given a natural finish, which is just fine. That is what a 1950's to 1960's house was designed to have. Just please, please dont paint them white. That is beyond tacky, makes the place look like a morgue, and shows every fingerprint.
Another thing you could do is something we did while fixing up a house which had been abandoned for a while and open to the weather. It had panel doors which had some damage to the panels. We repaired the panels with patching compound and then finished the doors by giving the frames a wood finish, and painting the panels a complimentary color. Looked great, and saved the solid old doors. I wish you well on your refurbishment adventures!
